“Who ya gonna call…”
The movie Ghostbusters was released in 1984 and it blew my mind when I first saw it as a kid. I loved the characters and the scenarios, not to mention all of the special effects. My favourite was always Egon Spengler, with all of his clever talk, but couldn’t help always laughing at Peter Venkman and his very dry humour.
So with it being the 40th anniversary of this classic, I thought I’d create a version of the Ghostbusters character designs in my style. I’m not a caricature artist by any stretch, but I thought I’d try and capture their likenesses as best as possible.
Each Ghostbusters cartoon character started as a pencil sketch, building them up out of a series of basic shapes, before adding in the details. The sketches are then taken into Adobe Illustrator to form the outlines and then a splash of colour.
Although I had a fair idea of how the packs and equipment look, I had great fun adding a little creative license to all the gizmos. If you look closely, you’ll see I’ve also added a cartoon version of the classic Ghostbusters logo on all their uniforms.
I think I may do a few more of the characters – maybe some of the ghosts or other key characters from the Ghostbusters movie franchise.
