Whilst working at bluebee, I had a request for a brand new cartoon logo design for a local plumbing firm, Octopus Plumbing. They specialise in all aspects of heating and plumbing and so wanted to reflect their many-armed approach in the form of a cute new octopus cartoon mascot.
Plumbing and heating logo ideas
The first step in designing our new cartoon plumbing logo was to get some initial ideas down on paper (or in my case, the trusty iPad).
The octopus character design had to be friendly and colourful and stand out on the side of their new company vehicles. Humour wasn’t essential in the design but was definitely a consideration. The client also requested that the octopus character be holding an array of different plumbing tools.
I sketched out a range of ideas and options. Some had the octopus peeking out over the text. Others had the octopus smaller and placed next to the text. I even did a couple of mad options, with an overworked octopus holding an array of plumbing tools! This was my clear favourite but might have conveyed the wrong message.
These were just what the client was looking for and he was immediately pleased with the range of options. The only changes were to make his face a little cuter. So I enlarged his eyes and made the mouth smaller and we were ready to go! Additional plumbing tools were also added to his arms.
Selecting some fun cartoon logo typefaces
Of course, you need an appropriate font to accompany a fun cartoon octopus. Several typeface options were selected for the client. They were then added alongside the rough pencils to give them a better idea of the whole composition.
The type needed to be rounded and friendly but also very recognisable, even without the octopus riding on top.
Adding colour to our plumber logo
The biggest consideration when it came to adding colour was where the logo would be used. The company vehicles are all blue, so I needed to select colours that wouldn’t clash.
I selected a series of different combinations of colours for the octopus mascot character and also the lettering. These had to work well together but also independently.
The client was pleased with all of these options, but the orange was a clear winner. Not only was the orange warm and welcoming, but the contrasting purple helped to bolster the message without being overpowering.
The final cartoon plumbing logo
The final stage was to supply the client with the logo files in a range of formats. This would make the process of getting items printed or shared on social media even easier.
The client is absolutely over the moon with the completed logo, as can be seen below adorning one of the company vehicles. The logo has also been used across their company stationery, uniforms and even promotional mugs!
